If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Who is Ray Kroc?”, or you wanted to know how he was able to achieve the things he did, then you’re in the right place. Here, you’ll get a biography, quotes, and actionable takeaways to apply to your business.

So many entrepreneurs put things off because they say:

“I’ll do X after I have kids”

“I’ll do X when my kids go away to school”

“I’ll do X after I get married”

or, “I’ll do X when I have X amount of money”

The list goes on and on of the excuses we make surrounding the “perfect timing” to achieve our goals.  Unfortunately, some people never reach that “perfect timing”, and as a result, the additional milestones they’ve set that succeed the firsts are never accomplished.  As a result, the grave is much more rich in hopes and dreams than it should be.

These unmanifested hopes and dreams could’ve drastically changed our world, but the inventions, trademarks, businesses, and advocates never saw the “perfect timing”.  To avoid falling prey to the “perfect timing” fallacy, I like to study people like Ray Kroc, and let me tell you why…

Who is Ray Kroc? | The Ray Kroc Bio

Ray Kroc is the founder of the McDonald’s franchise.  He was a paper cup salesman for a large portion of his working life, then moved on to become a milkshake machine salesman.

who was ray krocIn 1954, he visited a restaurant in San Bernadino, California and fell in love!  He saw the quick service, high quality, and raving fans of restaurant owners, Dick and Mac McDonald, and envisioned the concept exploding into franchises all over.  At the time Dick and Mac were unsuccessful with growing the franchise concept of McDonald’s and Ray requested to lead the growth of the franchise portion of the company.

In his 50s, far after the point Kroc thought he’d achieve his ideal lifestyle, he was starting a new career growing McDonald’s, but it was a success!  In 1955, he founded The McDonald’s System Inc. and later followed that with the purchase of the McDonald’s name and operating system.

He drastically grew McDonald’s by selling it as a vehicle to achieve the ideal lifestyle for many franchisees and living up to the promise. Franchisees bought McDonald’s franchises for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the brand has spread throughout the world.

As a result of Ray Kroc’s work on building the McDonald’s franchise concept, these interesting stats exist…

  • McDonald’s has 69 million customers per day
  • There are 14,155+ McDonald’s locations in the US
  • There are more than 37,000 McDonald’s locations in the world
  • McDonald’s sells 75+ burgers per minute
  • They sell 9 million+ pounds of fries daily
  • and, they employ over 1.5 million people

Some Takeaways From Ray Kroc on Perfect Timing

Ray Kroc was in his 50s when he first saw McDonald’s!  Prior to McDonald’s, he had no notable professional background.

Many people have an age, a family situation, or some other criteria they’d like to meet before, after, or on route to success, but it doesn’t always happen as you’d like.  Ray Kroc did not use age as an excuse to be successful. When he saw the McDonald’s idea, he took it and ran! Similarly, Estee Lauder said, she worked very hard to achieve her success: spending decades working day and night.

Once you find your foundational idea, put your best your all into it everyday and focus on making it the best you can.

When Ray Kroc found McDonald’s and became inspired to spread the franchises all over the world, he worked hard to find opportunities and people who would be interested in doing business with him.  As a result of his laser focus on selling the McDonald’s concept globally, the McDonald’s franchise feeds millions of people every day.

  1. Wow! I love the first quote you provide- ‘The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it’. I’ve heard the first part of that so many times; you need to be in the right place at the right time, but I’ve never considered the second half. I wonder how many people have been in the right place at the right time but not taken the opportunity in front of them. Just having the skill of being present at the right times isn’t enough; you also need the skill of seeing and seizing opportunity. Do you agree?
