I’ll be honest, it took me two WHOLE years to learn how to set up a blog for business and sales, but now that I’ve learned it, I want to shout it loud!

My Background on Blog Setup
Close to the time my enlistment in the military ended, I had chosen a path I wanted to take. I wanted to take my writing seriously.
I’m an author of 15 books and previous to blogging here, I would blog on my Christian Lifestyle blog. Even though I’ve studied business in-depth, it took me quite a bit of time to understand how to apply brick and mortar principles for how to set up a blog for business and sales.
With a brick and mortar business, you create a business plan, select good real estate, layout your business consistent with your sales objectives, and so on, but how do you do that with a digital business? That question stumped me for awhile, so I wrote this post to share with others how to set up a blog for business and sales.
A General Overview

1.) Spotting Your Real Estate
When setting up a digital business or expanding your brick and mortar networking capabilities online, you will have to first spot your real estate. In online blogosphere terms, real estate is your URL or your hosting.
Your URL can be (whateveryourlike).com, .net, .co, .org, or whatever you choose. You can purchase a domain from many places online.
I’ve personally purchased websites from Hostgator, Bluehost, and GoDaddy, but I’ve received the best customer service when I purchased my domain from SiteRubix (Wealthy Affiliate’s Website Hosting Company).

For my first site at www.kingdomofheavenambassador.com, I chose the URL based on my personal interest as a Christian, and I chose my hosting based on the popular articles on Bluehost. However, with www.howtoentrepreneur.org, I did differently. I used keyword research using Jaaxy. I input my ideas like “entrepreneur”, “how to be an entrepreneur”, and others. Then, in the “QSR” column, it tells me how many people are competing for that keyword. “How to entrepreneur” was a term searched over 140,000 times monthly, but had less than 100 competitors, so I decided to leverage the search term to propel my site to get instant traffic. After verifying my keyword in Jaaxy, I went to Siterubix and made my purchase, then www.howtoentrepreneur.org became my digital real estate within minutes!

2.) Choose The Aesthetic Layout
After choosing the real estate, you will have to choose the aesthetic layout. Siterubix makes creating a website a very instantaneous process, however, if you still feel uncomfortable, you can also go to a site like Upwork or Fiverr to have a developer design a site for you.
For me, creating my sites has been fairly easy since I’ve been working with WordPress for quite some time, and I had amazing support thru my online blog club at Wealthy Affiliate. Any question I ask relevant to how to set up a blog for business and sales can be answered almost instantly by the community there.
Once I have a proof of concept demonstrated by raving customers and sales, I will invest more in the aesthetics, however, for now my main concern was ease of use. I’ve had clients who pay thousands of dollars for a site to be created, yet get bad reviews about the user experience on their sites.

3.) Make Your Intent to Sell Clear

You simply need to make it apparent when people land on your website what niche you are in, and the things they can expect to buy from you.

Amazon (not a blog but I want you to see how quickly you conclude their intent to sell):
Look at Amazon, for example. When you land on their page, you don’t have to scroll, click or do anything to clearly see the end goal of the site is for you to buy products.
Brad Stone tells about Jeff Bezos’ philosophies on building a disruptive online business in the book The Everything Store. He tells from the perspective of family, employees, friends, and Jeff Bezos (the founder) himself on the story of the ascent of Amazon.
There’s a plan Amazon implemented that can help you discover in more depth how to set up a blog for business and sales from a business that generated 37.96 billion in 2017. I would check the book out if I were you, and I wanted to know how to set up a blog for business and sales!
Here’s a blog that makes $1.5 million in annual revenue, which means their site is working:
At Making Sense of Cents, her business model is revenue predominately thru affiliate marketing. You can immediately see her profitable categories: how to make money, make extra money, she has a course, and she talks about travel. Her intent to sell is a little more hidden than Amazon, but the intent to sell is still visible.
Here’s a blog that’s generated millions in sales selling internet marketing training, website hosting, and domains/digital real estate:
At Wealthy Affiliate, you can clearly see their intent to sell in their menu which takes up the top portion of their screen. Their sales funnel is set up to first offer free value rather than to have you pay to experiment with their services.
One last site…
This site is a startup blog, but the site owner generates more than $30,000 per month, and more than 2 million pageviews monthly thru blogging, so he knows a thing or two about website aesthetics and intent to sell.
Paul Scrivs created the Billionaire Blog Club now called “Dare to Conquer” with a clear intent to sell. When you land on his page, he immediately discloses his intent to teach you to blog, then you see premium books and courses.
Comparing the Mentality for How to set up a Blog for Sales and Business with Brick and Mortar
I think you should begin to understand. With a brick and mortar store, you usually have a greeter or something that immediately captures customers, and makes them understand what solutions you can provide within your location.
You want to offer the same clear intent online. Amazon, Making Sense of Cents, Wealthy Affiliate, and Dare to Conquer are great website examples for you to review when attempting to layout your site for ease of use and sales conversions.
What customers see when they land on your page (without scrolling) should capture their attention. You want navigation to be clear and the intention of the site to be obvious.
Many people shy away from having a clear intent to sell in the online space. They are either on one extreme or the other: spammers or unclear sellers. Either a spammer or a person who has an unclear intent to sell can have the same problem.
They won’t have good consistent results until they generate enough traffic that they have enough people phish around for their products and services–that’s the long road. Those people are either selling too hard and not offering enough value, or they make the intent to sell too hidden, and people take the value and don’t convert into customers.

4.) Place Your Products and Services in Relevant Places on Your Website
Whether you’re doing affiliate marketing, selling your own products, thriving from ads, or offering services, these should be posted on your blog. Some online websites don’t have products or services, but expect to make money online.
Some people will say they are writing to test their audience then they will create products and services in favor of their audience. If you’re still in the process of self-discovery and still in the conceptual phase of the business, that’s okay.
However, if you’re serious about setting up a blog for business and sales, you NEED to have products and services (even if they are ads and affiliate products or services). Can you imagine walking into a storefront without products or services? Do you think they could expect sales? NO!
When you examine how to set up a blog for business and sales, you will find comparable data about user experience online as offline. In offline retailers, they place popular offers at the entrance, they place high profit margin products where they get the most traffic, and so on. For online business, you want to pay attention to how people interact with your site, and place offers accordingly.
5.) Get Serious about Making a Business Plan
In my previous article, The Mission Essential Mindset For Making A Business Plan that works, I discussed the importance of making a practical business plan–more of a roadmap or action plan. If you want to know how to set up a blog for business and sales, you will need to implement the mindsets I discuss there: commitment, resilience, vision, strategy, and solution-focus or willingness to reach out.
Making a business plan for how you will set up a blog for business and sales should not be based solely on the success of others. It should not be “XXX is making $XXX, so I suspect I can too”. Instead, making a business plan should be strategic.
If you want to set up a blog for business and sales, you should have attainable goals that encompass the math and relationship requirements of the blogging business. Here are some examples of my business goals that are included in my business plan for How To Entrepreneur:
- I will use Jaaxy to choose keywords and forecast potential traffic based on those keywords
- I will choose to write on topics that have an average search that equals 125 views per day or more (Jaaxy provides this information)
- I will write 3 or more articles per week
- If I write 3 or more articles per week and each article attracts 125 viewers per day or more, then I should increase my traffic by 2625 pageviews per week, and end with more than 20,000 pageviews per year
- I will continue to provide valuable content to increase my conversion rate
- I want a conversion rate of 10% or more
- I will also work to build lead magnets and create an email list of 1000 readers or more (please sign up!) that converts
- I will deliver higher value to my email list than my organic or paid website traffic to build my relationships there and increase my conversions there from 10% to 20%
Do you understand where I’m going with this math?
If you want to know how to set up a blog for business and sales, you should not rely solely on other people’s success and shoot in the dark with your growth expectations. Use tools like Jaaxy that enable you to forecast the potential with your content, and make an action plan from there. Since I use Jaaxy, I can mathematically say:
- 3 blog posts x 125 viewers per day x 52 weeks per year = 19,500 pageviews
- 19,500 pageviews x 0.10 forecasted conversion rate = 1,950 customers in year one
If I promote products at $20.00 or more, then I should have made $39,000 in the first year. Now, you can choose to set your product promotion differently. You can choose to promote products with recurring revenue streams. This math works with affiliate marketing or otherwise. The possibilities are endless, but the math I just shared with you needs to be clear in your business, and the goals should be attainable for you.
6.) Get Traffic To Your Blog
When you’re setting up your blog and you’ve chosen your real estate, you’ve made your intent to sell clear, your aesthetics are good, and you’ve placed products and services in relevant places, then it’s time for traffic.
I learned my best traffic generation strategies thru Wealthy Affiliate (where I learned about affiliate marketing, PPC advertising, submitting my site to search engines, using the Jaaxy keyword tool, and a great content marketing strategy) This is my Google Analytics traffic count from my second day here on How To Entrepreneur:
506 pageviews for a site that’s a little over 2 days old! Wow! I don’t know about you, but I think that’s great.
7.) Maintain the Right Continual Training about Online Best Practices
Learning how to set up a blog for business and sales is a thing of the future. The internet is still fairly new when you look at the statistics on a global scale, therefore, it will change.
