How to Choose a Web Host
Before I go deeply into an explanation about InMotion, I want to arm you with the knowledge of how to choose a good web host because things can change. My review will be written based on historic performance, but what if the trend stops in a few months or years? I wouldn’t want you to follow my advice on a web host, then later on down the line, their performance slips, and you feel trapped trying to navigate this decision again, so check out my article with a full breakdown of how to choose a good web host vs. a bad web host.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about InMotion Hosting…
What is InMotion Hosting? An Overview
Similar to phone storage, computer storage, or heck…
Website hosting is the storage space that will hold your images, written content, audio files, and video files online. A hosting company’s job is to maintain their machine servers (that store your data), so when internet users request to see data you’ve uploaded to their server, it will be served to them quickly.
While it’s possible to buy your own server and perform the work of a web hosting company, it’s very specialized and technical work that includes:
- monitoring for hackers, spamware, and malware
- writing code to maintain the servers and security
- managing the uptime/downtime of the server
- and more
It’s a huge learning curve that most people avoid by paying for a web hosting service provider like InMotion Hosting.
InMotion hosting launched in 2001 and is one of the largest independently owned web hosting networks in the US. They host over 300,000 domains and continue growing. They have data centers in Los Angeles, California and Herndon, Virginia. InMotion servers are purchased directly from Dell and routers from Brocade and Cisco; they’re not pieced together, reused, or recycled. They invest millions annually on maintaining and upgrading their systems to optimize the performance for their customers.
How Does InMotion Hosting Work?
When you become a customer of InMotion Hosting, they provide you with the tools you need to quickly and easily create a website online. They have one-click installers of content management systems like:
- and 400 or more others!
As a result, if you feel uncomfortable working with WordPress, you can decide to use an alternative CMS that’s a better fit for you. In addition to the one-click installer, InMotion also offers free site transfer, and technical support if you need a hand with getting your website online.
Once your website is online, InMotion Hosting team of technology enthusiasts make sure it stays online by providing high standard servers and managing them to ensure they’re alway up, live, and operating at peak potential.
How Do I Get Started with InMotion Hosting?
To get started with InMotion Hosting, you would:
1. Choose a Plan
2. Create an Account
3. Register a Domain or Transfer an Existing Domain
4. Install Your Content management system (I recommend WordPress)
5. Customize your page
6. Begin adding content
Here’s a video to walk you thru what it’s like to purchase a domain, use the C-Panel, it teaches you about the file manager, and how to add WordPress (or other CMS):
If you simply want to know how to quickly get a website live, InMotion has a very nice one-click auto installer of WordPress that you can see used here:
For the best training on how to set up a website and get traffic to it, this is my #1 recommendation.

They don’t offer marketing consulting, SEO training, or PPC training. The only consulting that’s offered is customer support and tech support (which they do very well). If you require more support beyond tutorials on how to operate the website, you may want to consider one of my alternatives below.
InMotion Hosting Review Roundup
After reading lots of InMotion reviews and watching video after video, this is what I was able to compile good and bad.
Their Uptime and Speed Tests
Experts say your website rank is negatively effected by higher downtime than your competitors and by low page speeds. Some of the downtime and page speeds is self-inflicted because maybe you’re images are not compressed or your switching themes alot, however, sometimes, the downtimes can result from a sub-par hosting company.
Not if you’re hosted with InMotion hosting. They had very good results.
InMotion Hosting had an average uptime of 99.94% and an average load speed of 808ms according to testing done by HostingFacts.
Here’s a playlist I’ve compiled to help you see other opinions on InMotion hosting:
Common Positive Feedback
- InMotion hosting is very helpful
- Custom support is knowledgeable, patient, and polite
- No noticed downtimes
- and, overall, most customers were very happy with their experiences
Common Negative Feedback
While the negative reviews were less than 10% of the reviews I read, some of the negative reviewers said their sites went down, they were unable to get in contact with customer support, their issues had to be escalated, and they didn’t want to wait the time it took for the issue to be resolved.
Most Helpful Positive InMotion Hosting Review
I found many reviews that were very thorough with examples of how InMotion hosting helped various customers maintain their websites or navigate issues (sometimes even self-inflicted issues), here are two examples…
Kristy Leblanc wrote a positive review on WHOIShostingthis saying:
I love InMotion. Whenever I have a support issue it’s always resolved by the end of the chat. With my previous host I waited for 20-30 mins to speak with someone, communication was always an issue, and half the time they had to escalate it to another department resolve the issue (which added several more hours to the process).
I’m very happy with the support I’ve received with InMotion and I also appreciate the ease of the dashboard and help articles. They put a lot of thought into the customer experience.
Sharon Boggon from pintangle.com wrote:
I have been with Inmotion hosting since 2005 and have at various times had to call on their support and/or technical knowledge. I figured after 9 years of excellent service I should write a review! In that time I cannot think of a problem that support did not attend to promptly. I am also happy with uptime and their pricing and have often recommended them to friends and business associates.
Most Helpful Negative InMotion Hosting Review
Andreas Zhou from ltl-school.com wrote a one-star review in Nov 2018 saying:
Our website and email has been offline for more than half a day now. Their support offers no solution, except saying they passed on the issue to their “System Administrations team”. We are not allowed to speak to their systems administration team.We were told we will be contacted once the issue has been solved. In the meantime our whole business is collapsing. No service, no support, no communication. We are going to sue them. Dont hoste with inmotion if you want your business to survive.
InMotion Hosting Price
InMotion Hosting has several plan and pricing options. They have plans optimized for WordPress, VPS plans, dedicated servers, and shared business hosting. It’s most common that you’d start out with a shared hosting plan and upgrade as your site gets more content and data. InMotion is capable of scaling from a very small site to a large site with millions of visitors and lots of content, however, we recommend most people start out with a basic plan like their: launch, power, or pro plans. If you follow the links enclosed in this post, InMotion will give you a discount as a How To Entrepreneur reader. As a result, the pricing will breakdown like this…
My Final Opinion of InMotion Hosting
Overall, InMotion hosting is a solid choice if you’re looking for reliable service, helpful 24/7 support, and great website performance. They have been maintaining a great reputation as a top hosting solution since 2001, so if you chose them, you are unlikely to be disappointed.
If you’re still unsure about whether InMotion hosting is the best option for you, here are some of my top recommendations to consider:
