Jaye had a problem sending and recieving faxes while he was on the road, so he decided to try to make a solution. In partnership with Jack Reiley, Jaye made a solution to send and recieve faxes online.

They decided to start a company to offer the online fax service to others, and Jfax was born.  In 1999 Jfax went public, and the name was changed to J2. The company began branching into other verticals beyond faxing, and today, they own several brands including eVoice.

How Does eVoice Work?

So let’s use this scenario…

You start a business. You’ve started to do marketing and sales, and you figure out a marketing plan that works. Suddenly, you’re getting lots of calls and you’re a one-man show. You decide you have to make some changes to your communication system because:

  • You’re not as productive as you’d like because you’re starting work and consistently interrupted by phone calls
  • You don’t feel quite ready to hire someone (or you may hire someone in addition to solving this problem)
  • You have more calls than you can answer
  • Your personal phone calls and business phone calls are getting mixed up
  • You don’t always have time to go back and listen to voicemails, but you want to know what they say
  • You want to do webinars, demos, and screenshare presentations sometimes
  • You’d like to have more context before answering a call, so you can prioritize based on which calls are most important

At this point, eVoice offers a potential solution for you. With eVoice, you would be able to leverage technology which could cut back on labor costs. Rather than feeling swamped and consistently interrupted with phone calls. eVoice serves as an answering system (with the auto attendant). Callers would each be greeted with a custom message you could set that could be spoken by the built-in computer voice, you can hire a professional voiceover artists thru eVoice, or you can upload audio that you’ve recorded elsewhere (like thru Fiverr).

After the personal greeting, customers would be placed on hold where they’d hear hold music, custom messaging, or a combination you’ve recorded. When you answer the phone call, the auto attendant will announce the context of the call based on the extension the person selected, and you can accept or reject the call based on its importance to your business.

You can call out and recieve calls on your mobile devices when you’ve downloaded the mobile apps. As a result, you can seamlessly answer phone calls from any device whether you’re in the office or on-the go.

4. Begin Use

Once you’ve set everything up, you’re ready to get started sending and recieving phone calls.

What Does eVoice Do Well

  • They offer alot of features
  • They’re affordable
  • They offer auto receptionists and live receptionists
  • It’s easy to set up
  • Most VOIP providers require you hire professional greeters or record the greeting on your own, so it’s nice eVoice offers a computer voice option
  • The professional greeter option is very affordable
  • The user interface is easy to use
  • The system sounds very professional–I’ve gotten lots of compliments on my eVoice setup
  • They trascribe the voicemail to email or text
  • They send the audio files of recorded calls and voicemails to your email (if you configure it that way in your settings)

What Doesn’t eVoice Do Well

  • From my experience, the support wasn’t knowledgeable. When I called to ask about the phone service features, they put me on hold for a long time.
  • They don’t have any plans with unlimited minutes
  • They don’t integrate with CRM
  • I personally thought the computer voice sounded fine, but other customers said the computer voice sounds robotic, and recommended the professional greeting option for $25 (inside eVoice)
  • They don’t have an option to buy or rent compatible cloud phones

My Final Opinion of eVoice

I have personally tested out eVoice and I was impressed. When I had people call my eVoice line, they thought it sounded very professional, and would give them a good impression of a company. I think the features and user interface are very easy to use, and of all the VOIP companies I’ve tried so far, they seem to be the easiest to set up, and a low price to get started. Many other companies will require you to fork out additional costs for the voiceover work, while eVoice has the computer voice option you could use. People are really skeptical of new businesses that’s why I recommend a high level of professionalism for new start ups.   2. It seems like eVoice is great for those in that fine middle of expanding their business but not so much to the point to where they need to hire those to answer phone calls. From reading this article, it seems like eVoice’s niche is more in that transitional phase between sole proprietor and multiple expansion. This would be something considered a stepping stone for me when I get to that level. Upon reading this review I’m elated to see there is a solution for a potential problem for the busier proprietor unable to answer every call in a punctual amount of time.

Regardless of size, it’s healthy to leverage technology, so even as you hire administrative staff, it would still be helpful to have a system like eVoice to keep labor costs down.

    1. Hello Henry, I understand why you would have that concern. I have an eVoice account and I didn’t like hearing that customers had trouble cancelling. From my experience, the customer service has been very receptive, so hopefully, that was just subjective experiences.

  6. Thank you for this thorough review. Customer service is very challenging when you are building your business. It’s very difficult when you’ve started for a while and it’s getting busy, but you cannot afford to hire someone to answer your calls just yet. This will be perfect for my friend who has a printing business. She mostly does the labor and cannot focus on finishing up the projects. I will tell her to give the eVoice free trial a try.

  7. Some time back, I came across eVoice but I did not bother more about it as I didn’t have a well-detailed review like the one I have just read. To start with, I am an active member of the wealthy affiliate, and at times I get compressed by frequent emails and even calls from some clients who need more explanation on different categories. I sometimes find it hard but I still have to answer all the calls and even the emails. I think I am very lucky to have come across this post today because I have learned a lot from it.

    I am sure to create an eVoice account right away as I am sure by having it, it will reduce the pressure I get from clients without necessarily hiring someone to respond, I think this will save me on cost and efficiency. I really appreciate your help on this post, thank you.

  9. I’m glad something like this is being talked about. There are some little problems that we always neglect as nothing but eventually can crumble a business. Communication is part of those problems. To be honest, I do get upset whenever I wanna make inquiries about a product or complained and there is no quick or no response at all. That always always leaves me with bad or hard feelings about the company of customers neglect.

When it comes to managing success in business, one needs to take care of certain things as the things we often take for granted are the things that really matter. Like you rightly said, a business that is thriving can easily flop within a twinkle of an eye when certain things are neglected, like inability to respond to phone calls (like you rightly said), poor customer support and a lot more.I know some people that contract people from platforms like fiver, Upwork, freelance etc to act as virtual assistant to them. These virtual assistants handle both data entry, calendar, calls for such people. The evoice is another great way through which a boss can respond faster to his customers, without pissing them off. evoice auto attendant feature, makes it to stand out.

I would recommend putting an autoattendant or answering system in place before hiring a virtual assistant because it keeps labor costs down. If the answering system is still not enough, then hire, and the answering system can still help prioritize calls and maintain a professional image. That’s my opinion.

This was very helpful, and I really appreciate the candor regarding the pros and cons, and suitable alternatives.  I particularly appreciated the fact that you provided information regarding the company behind eVoice. That’s typically the first question I ask before I make a commitment to a system or product I’ve not heard of before (been burned too many times before).

    Speaking of which, how is the general voice quality?  I was a very early adopter of VOIP, back when it frankly wasn’t very good, so am very sensitive to voice quality!
