If you’re new to search engine optimization or strategically doing content marketing, then you may have never heard of keyword research. To summarize…
The number 1 goal of everyone marketing online is to drive traffic to their offers and get sales. To drive traffic, most people rely on the search engines for more than 50% of their traffic.
The search engines serve content by relevance, and this relevance is determined by the words used in your text, the images, titles, backlinks, the URL, and the other content on the site. When everything lines up, it’s likely you’ll get rankings in the search engines.
Once you rank on the search engines, when a person types in a certain combination of words (keywords), and their search is relevant to what you wrote about, then the search engines will serve your content to the user.
If you’re not using words search engine users would use in searches, then you’re missing out on loads of potential traffic.
When I started out online, I created a Christian Lifestyle Blog. I would write aggressively on the blog, but I had no idea how to monetize it or how to use search engine optimization.
I relied heavily on social media for traffic, but it was very labor intensive to drive traffic from social media because you have to aggressively publish content on your website, then do the same for most social media platforms (since the shelf life of a post is so short).
Once I learned search engine optimization, I learned how to create a sustainable traffic source that is not so much like running on a rat wheel (as social media can be), and I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with people like you.
What’s More Important than Keyword Research
So from my experience writing topics from the top of my head, I’d get a great idea, then think about how to turn that idea into a catchy title.
Catchy from my standpoint was simply a title that invoked curiosity and made people want to click.
Remember, I was mainly using social media marketing, so this is 100% necessary for social media.
However, if you want the search engines to be a primary traffic source, you can’t rely on “catchy titles” alone. You have to find out what people are looking for when they want to read content like what you’ve written–this is where keyword research comes in.
Let’s say, you want to write about “How to download an app on the Samsung S8”, you want to make sure you’re using keywords with low competition and high search volume, but that’s not all…
If you want to make money, you also have to find keywords with commercial intent.
Commercial Intent and Keyword Research Tools
Commercial intent keywords are money-making keywords. It doesn’t matter if you’re solely running a media company or if you run a business and use digital media to promote it, you need to make money.
To make money, you have to clearly have an intent to sell otherwise, people can overlook what you’re really trying to do. Within your content marketing strategy, you have to use a mix of informational keywords and money keywords in order to drive income and sales.
What is an Informational Keyword
In my Bing Ads Tutorial, I explained commercial intent keywords. If you’re thinking about using PPC Marketing in the search engines, then creating content with commercial intent will save you lots of money, however, even if you’re using SEO as a primary means of attracting customers, it’s still important to use keywords with commercial intent to attract people who want to buy.

What are “Money Keywords”?
On the other hand, “money keywords” are product focused. They are reviews of products, comparisons, or “Best of” posts.
The Informational Posts and Money Posts Ratio
There is no dead-set ratio, but at Human Proof Designs, they sell ready-made affiliate websites. They’ve created 1100+ affiliate websites to sell to others and written over 26,000 articles for other websites, which makes them highly credible if you want a turnkey formula for creating affiliate websites successfully. Regarding their informational and money post ratio, the business owner, Dominique, said:
“You don’t really want more than 80% of your posts to be money posts, and 70% would be better, but don’t think of this as a number you have to hit in order to succeed.
Some of my sites are more like 70% informational, and others are around the 50-50 mark. Go with what your keyword research tells you people are searching for, and make sure you have a balance.”
When expounding further, he mentioned that Google prefers informational content over “affiliate content”, therefore, it’s important to have informational content. Informational content is not penalized when algorithms change, but promotional content is sometimes penalized. For rankings, you can create as many informational posts as you’d like, but for affiliate or product/service income, you’d want to create cornerstone money posts and internally link to them in several of your informational posts.

When you’re brainstorming, it may be difficult to think about keywords that:
1. People are searching for
2. Have low competition in the search engines
3. Have commercial intent or informational intent (depending on where you are in your content publishing)

4 Simple Steps to Do Keyword Research
To choose a good keyword for website content, you’d want to…
1. Brainstorm potential topics
When brainstorming, you want to consider:
- What problems your clients (or potential clients) may have
- The reservations a customer may have that stops them from buying your product or service
- What problems or solutions you offer the marketplace
- How to explain the benefits of what you offer the marketplace
- and, How your solutions apply to daily life
2. Log Onto Jaaxy
After you have ideas, you’d long onto Jaaxy
As an example, let’s say, you’ve brainstormed and you’re thinking about doing a post on Natural Cures for Common Colds. With that idea in mind, we’d want to go to Jaaxy to see if we can find related keywords that people are searching for, has low competition, and has good commercial intent. Let’s take a look…
3. Use the Website Keyword Suggestion to Your Advantage
As you can see, when I types in “Natural cures for common colds”, the search volume was <10 people per month, which is pretty bad. Instead, “natural remedies for common colds” had 120 avg searches, 21 average visitors would visit as a result of ranking, therefore, that would be a better keyword to go after.
4. Create Content around Your Keywords
After you’ve merged the topic you wanted to write about with what others are searching to find, then you want to create content that satisfies the user’s intent for searching. To get ideas, you can use Brian Dean’s Skyscaper Method.
His first step is to see the most popular content on the topic. Following his advice, you could go to Google or another search engine, and see what results pop up first…
You want to take a look at the top results, the content length, the graphics, the solutions they offer, and what’s working in the article. Then, you take your analysis and create a better version of what’s there. Using your keyword, you’d create your content.
