5 Best Places to File Your Taxes Online for Maximum Credits

Tax time can be downright confusing! There are tax offices showing up all over the place: from grocery stores to gas stations to jewelry stores, and everywhere else. They all seem to be saying, “We can get you the biggest refund”, “We’re the most accurate”, “we give you the best price”, or “we’re the most user-friendly”, but who do you trust?

Tax season can be stressful enough without trying to navigate so many issues: who’s telling the truth and who’s not, who’s trying to take your money, who’s really going to give value, and who’s going to have the longest wait times.  Many people dread this time of year because:

  • They don’t like compiling receipts
  • They don’t like accounting for all the money they’ve paid out or received
  • They fear owing money to the IRS
  • They don’t like the mystery of not knowing how much they’ll have to pay
  • They have gotten ripped off by tax professionals (or they know others who have) and they don’t want to be victims
  • or, they don’t like the busyness when people get their returns and fill up all the stores!

Whatever the reason they have, you might be able to relate. It’s likely that if you’re here, you’re not sold on your previous tax solution, and it didn’t check all of the boxes to earn your loyalty for this year.  I’m hoping this list will give you all of the information you need to confidently choose the best place to file your taxes online this year.

How I Identified These Solutions

I chose these solutions based on:

  • Whether or not they offer common conveniences that make filing taxes online easier
  • Whether they offer offline and online support
  • Best guarantees
  • The business features they offer
  • The user experience on the website
  • The customer reviews
  • and, the pricing

I favored businesses who offered:

  • Money-back guarantees or audit assurance guarantees
  • Easy importation of previous years’ tax returns and tax documents
  • Phone, email, live chat, and in-person support
  • Those who offered e-filing options for businesses
  • Those who had more positive reviews than average or negative
  • and those who were competitively priced

In general, I’ve found a very competitive landscape this year. There are a lot of great software choices, however, these are the best places I’ve found to file your taxes online, and I’ll explain the features of each so you can see why.

1. H&R Block Online: Best for Personal, Sole Proprietors, and LLC’s [Online and Offline Support]

Many people know H&R Block by their local branch locations. They operate more than 12,000 offices in the US, Australia, and in India.  What many people don’t know is how good their online filing software is. They’ve been working on their software since 1995, and now with their new partners (Xero, IBM, Walmart, and Amazon), they’ve really “upped their game”.

Personal Taxes

They offer a smooth user-experience for personal taxes. Customers suggest that the e-filing experience is very simple and the artificial intelligence their now using (thanks to IBM) helps them maximize deductions and credits. I’d venture to say that e-filing with H&R Block is better than filing in-person!

H&R Block also offers business filing for Sole Proprietors and LLC’s, however, if you run an S-Corp, C-Corp, or Partnership, you might want to consider a different software like TaxAct or TurboTax.

2. TurboTax: Best for Personal Taxes and Business Taxes [Industry Leader]

TurboTax is the industry leader for tax software for good reason. They offer integration with many platforms (including Quickbooks and Mint). They use an interview-style format to guide you as you’re completing your taxes. There are several locations where you can click for more information and get helpful tips that explain obstacles you might have. Overall, it’s a solid software for filing your taxes online.

3. TaxAct: Best for Personal and Business of All Types [Best Priced–Easy to Use]

When comparing with H&R Block or Turbotax, most people haven’t heard of TaxAct. They’ve been quietly gaining market share because they have some pretty solid software.

Personal taxes

Reviewers compare the user experience of the software to the mega gameplayers. Added to the UX, customers say TaxAct has good customer support!  You can file personal taxes very easily.  You can import your previous year’s taxes from TurboTax or H&R Block. They offer free e-filing for 1040EZ and very affordable pricing for their other plans: lower than the industry leaders.

Business Taxes

One huge competitive advantage for TaxAct is you can file business taxes regardless of your business structure, and still pay $200 or less–this is a huge differentiator. Some S-Corps, C-Corps, and partnerships want to be able to do it themselves, have an employee do them, or have their personal accountant look over what they’ve done. With TaxAct, you can input all of your data on your own regardless of your business structure.

  1. Taxes! I hate taxes, but they are a necessary evil.  Without taxes our countries would not survive, we would have poor roads, no rubbish collection, no health services, no water treatment, and no government to keep the order.

There is nothing better than getting a tax return at the end of the year,  these are some good places to file your taxes and get the maximum credits back after your hard work.  I always forget that there are several places you can file your taxes, so I will check these other places out the next time I file my taxes.  Money, money, money!

    1. You’re not alone in hating taxes. There’s a minority out there that like them, and I’d say it’s because they get their highest pay as a result of them. Haha. Hopefully, you find a good fit, Kris! Let me know how they work out for you.

  2. Taxes is something which is terrifying me. I am always using professional services, who are doing this for me. I know that on those online platforms, we can ask for help. But I never tried it. I will be honest, I am really afraid of them, but your topic is interesting. Do you think that support is enough for people, who are afraid of making a mistake?

    1. I think alot of people share that same phobia Igor! Haha. I started out my working life using tax software and was more hesitant to hire it out. I have friends who feel opposite and I watch them get charged horribly and spend lots of time making things “tax-ready”. For me, having extra eyes is all I’d need. I think there are people out there who would simply appreciate the extra eyes because the software nowadays is really good!
