1&1 Ionos Review: Is this the Best Hosting Company for You?

1&1 ionos review

If you’re looking for a thorough 1&1 Ionos review, you’re in the right place.

Back when the internet was just becoming mainstream, there were people trying to introduce the opportunity to others, and 1&1 Ionos is one of those trailblazers. Founded in Germany in 1988, 1&1 has a long history of helping small and medium-size businesses start and grow online, but that doesn’t make them a good fit for you. In this review, we’ll be looking at the pros and cons of 1&1 Ionos to help you decide whether this is the right hosting solution for you.

In this 1&1 Ionos review, I will give you:

  • What it is
  • How it works
  • Pros and Cons
  • What it does well and what it does not
  • What others are saying (good and bad)

What is 1&1 Ionos? An Overview

1&1 ionos

1&1 Ionos is one of the longest standing hosting companies in the industry. Before Bluehost, Hostgator, A2 Hosting, InMotion Hosting, or Wealthy Affiliate, 1&1 was already operating. Starting in 1988, they’ve been offering hosting servers to businesses for 30 years! As a result, they have very established processes and standards, and they’re very knowledgeable about how to keep a website live regardless of the amount of traffic or storage space needed.

1&1 Ionos is considered the largest domain registrar in Europe! They manage more than 8 million customer contracts and have 12 million domains under management. They have 90,000 operating servers, 15 facilities in 9 different countries, and 10 geo-redundant ISO 27001S certified data centers. 2,000 employees from 40 different countries are on the 1&1 team. If you decide to host your website with 1&1, you can be sure you will have top-of-the-line infrastructure and equipment.

1&1 is definitely an anomaly in the industry, so it’ no wonder they’ve been around for so long. Added to their hosting services, they also offer:

  • Email marketing
  • Domain registration
  • a Website builder
  • Google Ads management services
  • SEO
  • Local Business Listing
  • Marketing advising
  • and, their SEO tool called Ranking Coach

How Does 1&1 Ionos Work?

Inside of their 15 facilities, 1&1 Ionos owns and manages several servers. These servers provide storage space to their customers and ensure when internet users want to see content, the content is served to them on-demand. They also make sure that as technology advances, they upgrade their technology, so customers maintain high speed, high uptime, and ultimately achieve success online.

How Do I Get Started with 1&1 Ionos?

To get started with 1&1 Ionos, you’d:

1. Pick your plan

2. Create your account

3. Purchase or migrate your domain

4. Install your Content Management System or use their website builder

5. Customize your website

Who is 1&1 Ionos For?

Due to the size of the business and the amount of equipment they have, 1&1 Ionos is suitable for small, medium, and large size businesses. They have shared, cloud, and dedicated servers suitable to scale from low to high traffic websites, and from low content to those sites that require lots of storage space.

1&1 Ionos Tools & Training

1&1 Ionos has lots of training for their customers. They have a blog called Startup Guide, they give customers a dedicated advisor, and they have RankingCoach which is their software that comes with 1200 videos teaching customers how to improve their visibility online.

1&1 Ionos Support

1&1 Ionos has 24/7 support by phone, live chat, and by email, but there are mixed reviews about how responsive they are.

What Does 1&1 Ionos Do Well

  • They offer a wide array or paramount services
  • They have dedicated consultants for their customers
  • They have good infrastructure and equipment
  • They have a large team
  • Their prices are some of the cheapest in the industry
  • They offer lots of information on your website and don’t simply provide claims. For example, they tell you the bandwidth, the server size, how many CPU cores, the server brands, and how much traffic the server can handle, whereas many other brands hide this information until the fine print

What Doesn’t 1&1 Ionos Do Well

Customer reviews suggest that 1&1 Ionos doesn’t do well with billing. After reviewing hundreds of reviews, it’s a repeat issue that 1&1 Ionos charges people for services they didn’t sign up for, and they don’t cancel billing when customers request it. The negative reviews about billing span across years, so it’s not something new and reviews within 2019 show the same problems.

Other reviews also suggest they are aggressive with upsell tactics.

1&1 Ionos Review Roundup

On the BBB, 1&1 had an A+ rating, but had 1 1/2 stars based on customer reviews. As of this writing, there are 68 reviews and most of them are related to billing issues. It would’ve been nice to think the billing issues is something of the past, but the latest negative reviews are from February 2019 (this month). People are fraudulently billed for services they didn’t activate or request, and some customers mentioned they don’t even know who the company is.

Similarly, there are 9,278 reviews on Trustpilot. 79% of the reviews are 4 or 5 stars, but quite a few of those are one-word reviews saying “Good service” or “Good”. I’m personally hesitant to acknowledge reviews that are so short because sites like Fiverr offer unethical services where freelancers will post reviews about services without ever having used them. Responses like “Good” can be easily forged, and if a company has claims of fraudulent practices anyway, it’s not unlikely that they might try to bury them with paid reviews.

22% of the reviews on Trustpilot were 3-star and below, and the negative reviews were quite descriptive. A recurring issue was about their billing and invoicing, so I’d say it’s not something you want to overlook.

Common Positive Feedback

  • Good service
  • Their website builder is easy to use and makes nice websites
  • Been with them for years

Common Negative Feedback

  • They billed for a service I didn’t sign up for
  • They sent an invoice saying they would be withdrawing a payment within 7 days, and had already deducted the payment
  • I wanted to cancel, but they billed before the term was over
  • It wanted a refund and fell within their refund policy, but they wouldn’t refund me
  • They drastically raised the prices on me
  • They were aggressively trying to upsell me
  • Customer service is hard to reach

Most Helpful Negative 1&1 Ionos Review

“Aggressive tactics”

“I got a phone call today about my website wanting me to add to it. The second person I talked to could not take no for an answer. Her supervisor got on the phone he really couldn’t take no for an answer. I was on the phone with him for more than a half an hour telling him no. I kept telling him I had to be in a meeting at a certain time. He said it sounds like to him I’m just trying to get rid of him off the phone. I took that as he was calling me a liar. I did not like that. I told him I might have to find another provider for my website. That did not stop him. I finally told him I had to be in my meeting and hung up on him. I did not like this aggressive tactic that was used on me. I like my website the way it is. I hope no one there messes with it. Very concerned after this tactic.”

Scott Villmer, TrustPilot reviewer

“I’ve had enough.”

The time has come for me to part ways with 1 and 1. My main gripe has to do with their invoice and billing system, which is consistently flawed. Please note that the day you receive an invoice, it will contain the following language: “You will find your invoice of $29.99 for contract [redacted] attached.
The amount will be deducted within the next 7 days by means of the payment method specified on the Payment Details page.”
This is not the truth however. By the time you receive the invoice, your account will have already been charged. But you won’t know this and you’ll believe you still have time to cancel that thing you didn’t want renewed in the first place. You’ll place your cancellation request and receive a confirmation email stating the date your cancellation will take place (in this recent incident, that date was the same day of the request).
The next day you’ll receive an email that your invoice has been paid and your credit card has been charged. Yes, for that item that you cancelled. You’ll call customer service and they’ll tell you that your account was actually already charged BEFORE the invoice notification email was ever sent to you. You’ll be irritated to learn this and you’ll ask for a refund. They’ll hem and haw. There will never be a supervisor available to speak with you, even after they place you on hold for 18 minutes while they try to fetch one for you. You’ll eventually come round to obtaining a refund, or so they say. When you request a confirmation email stating that a refund is forthcoming, they’ll agree but not actually send it to you. DONE! Beware…this is an ongoing issue with 1 and 1 and they know it’s an issue but have yet to do anything about it.

1&1 Ionos Price

Price is one major advantage at 1&1 Ionos. They have some of the lowest introductory prices in the industry. Their shared hosting prices break down like this:

1&1 ionos reviewTheir plans are $1/mo and $12 for the first year! There are not many companies out there that compete with that pricing.

My Final Opinion of 1&1 Ionos

Overall, I really wanted to like 1&1 Ionos. I think they have a lot of positive things going for them: they employ a lot of people, they’ve been around for three decades, they have facilities all across the world, and they have some nice perks. Unfortunately, I can never recommend a company that has longstanding ethical issues. If people are being billed fraudulently, and aren’t able to cancel their subscriptions, it’s not good business ethics. As a result, I wouldn’t recommend 1&1 Ionos, however, I know some people will want to give them a try anyway. Top Alternatives

Unfortunately, since they have so many complaints about fraud and poor business ethics, I’d recommend you check out one of these alternatives instead:

Wealthy Affiliate (#1 Top Recommended) – This company has a strong history of integrity and outstanding customer service. What’s an extra perk about Wealthy Affiliate is they include a networking community, lots of training, superb hosting, and YOU CAN TRY THEM OUT FOR FREE. 1. Thank you Tiffany for this balanced and detailed review on 1&1 Ionos.

Personally, i’ve observed that most reviews are somehow boring, but you’ve found a way to make this interesting!

I started my own online business recently, and you’ve helped appreciate the community i belong too (Wealthy Affiliate), even more. I will not appreciate an aggressive marketing tactic either.

I had a great read, your post has saved me from the loss of time, effort and money.

Hope to come around some other time

  2. Never heard of 1 1 Ionos. I came across your review after looking for a hosting plan alternative to the one I have. Doesn’t sound very good compared to other hosting plans I’ve seen. Proper billing policies and customer service is absolutely necessary for a hosting plan. I’m glad I came across your review, this has helped me take this one off my list for consideration! By the way, I will be looking into your recommendation, it looks promising!

    1. I’m so glad the review was helpful for you Jacob! I was really sad to see people had problems with their billing at 1&1 Ionos because they looked like that had a lot of things going for them. Ethics is one of the strongest factors I consider in my reviews, and unfortunately, 1&1 didn’t pass the test.

  3. Dear Tiffany,

I personally appreciate all the research and hard work you put into creating this helpful and informative review post. And every time I read one of your post I learn a lot of valuable information. Thanks a lot!

Its great to hear that they are in the market since 1988 and it tells the story about them. 24/7 support by phone is interesting. The detailed and in-depth information about others opinions/reviews (Review Roundup) is very helpful and will help many in their purchase decision. It is always advisable to do some research and read genuine and unbiased review post before joining any program or services. You have given great value via your review.

I loved how easy the review makes it for readers. No additional research needed. You left no stone up-turned in explaining how it all works.

    Wishing you great Success!

    Paul

  4. OK first of all, I don’t like a program that is not willing to let me try it it for free so lets start there, how I am I to know if a program is a good fit for me if I can’t try it?. 1&1 lonos sounds like something that I wouldn’t consider despite it being around for over thirty years.  And what is with the billing problems?  You would think they would’ve had the billing issue fixed by now, I mean all those negative reviews they are having about the billing system, should’ve made them do something about it. Another concern I have is the fact that I cannot contact the owners, I feel more secure in a program where I know its possible to contact the owners.

So that being said, I think Wealthy Affiliate would be a better fit for me.

Thank you for this review, it has been an eye opener for me.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Rose. It’s actually quite uncommon in the hosting industry that you’d be able to try the service for free or that you’d be able to contact the owners. Wealthy Affiliate has made that a standard for their business, but it’s the only I’ve seen.

  5. Hi Tiffany,

Thank you for this comprehensive review about 1&1 lonos. FYI, l was once an affiliate of 1&1 but had terminated my contact with them as one of my customers was complaining about being overcharged. l have tried to contact their customer support several times for assistance but to no avail. I had, therefore, advice my customer to move his website to another hosting service provider. I was so embarrassed and apologize to my customer for the inconvenience caused.

This will not be the case if my customer hosted his website at Wealthy Affiliate, l am totally happy with their SiteSupport team. I had experienced several site issue and they are pretty fast to fix the problem. Thumb up for them and is highly recommended.

    Best Wishes.
